Professional Development Workshops
MSGR conducts regular workshops aimed at supporting supervisors of all graduate research students. The Supervision Skills Workshops have been specially designed for supervisors new to the University of Melbourne, and fulfil the new supervisor training requirements as listed in the PhD Handbook. The rest of the workshops have been designed to focus on issues relevant to supervisors from across disciplines and with varying levels of experience. Supervisors are expected to attend at least one skill development workshop every five years, as stated in the PhD Handbook. Workshops are an excellent opportunity to develop new skills, expand your networks and find ways you can better support your students. All workshops are free and registration details are listed below.
Supervision Workshops are convened by Dr Gail Ellis, Tel: (03) 8344 8468.

Ethical Risk Management for RHD Supervisors
How does a group of people, with different levels of skill and experience and different points of view, decide on the ethics of a research proposal? How do you identify ‘ethical risk’ and how can these risks be managed? What is reasonable to expect of a student in preparing their first ethics application? What are your responsibilities as a supervisor?
This training, over 2 mornings, will enhance your understanding of ethical risk management and communication. This will be of value not only in your role as a supervisor but should also improve your own skills as an ethics applicant. You will get the opportunity to observe a human research ethics committee in operation and gain a better understanding of the types of discussions that are generated from the application content- this can only help improve the way that your ethics application s and those of your students are prepared and presented.
