Melbourne School of Graduate Research

The Futures Project: Sustainable Communities

Explore the complexities of a real-world problem.

Discover the advantages of an interdisciplinary solution.

Make it happen.

Whatever your discipline, you will be required as a doctoral graduate to navigate an increasingly complex, competitive employment environment. This subject complements the focussed intensity of doctoral research by providing you with an opportunity to be mentored by experts, and to develop and demonstrate skills in cross-disciplinary problem solving, teamwork and project management. If Ethical Leadership is the theory, The Futures Project is the practice.

Course Overview

The theme of The Futures Project is Sustainable Communities. MSGR has worked closely with the Melbourne Sustainable Society Institute (MSSI) to finalise an interdisciplinary curriculum for doctoral students. The Futures Project begins with an intensive conference-style mixture of lectures, workshops and seminars introducing key concepts in sustainability and community development, as well as project management skills and strategies. In the weeks following the intensive, each team will meet regularly to plan and develop the project, working with an 'industry expert' mentor. Final presentations are scheduled for Friday 17 September. Course objectives are further detailed in the handbook entry 950-805 The Futures Project.
